Chazzan Yossi Fleishman
Cantor Yosef Fleishman, an especially lyrical tenor, commenced his meteoric musical mission at age 17 in his hometown of Rehovot, Israel, while serving as a diligent disciple in the famed Hebron Yeshiva (located in Givat Mordecai, Jerusalem). At the time he was appointed Cantor of the main Kiryat Moshe Synagogue in Rehovot, whereupon he was invited to make guest appearances in other neighbourhood sanctuaries such as Beit Haknesset Hagadol and Beit Haknesset Shoneh Halakhot.

Together with his yeshiva studies in Hebron, he consecrated his time to vocal and musicological development under the tutelage of opera connoisseur Victor Kotik as well as Cantors Yitzchak Eshel and Chaim Eliezer Hershtick. In 1997, Cantor Fleishman was chosen to serve as Cantor in the Tifereth Zvi synagogue of Northern Tel Aviv (and hence as a successor to the renowned Cantor Leib Glants z"l) under the leadership of (current Chief Rabbi) Yonah Metzger. After this special appointment, he began appearing at international cantorial spectacles.

Cantor Fleishman interrupted his cantorial career in order to serve in the Israeli Defence Forces, but upon his eventual successful military discharge, he resumed appearances at major concers throughout the Jewish world in such venues as New York, New Jersey, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Antwerp. During the High Holy Days of 1999 he was chosen to serve as Cantor in the Great Neck Synagogue (Long Island, New York), home to hundreds of devoted worshippers where he electrified the congregation with a synthesis of classical liturgy and newly developed compositions. In 2001, despite his tender age, he was invited to particpate in the annual Jewish concert in Paris, where he impressed the audience alongside Cantors Chaim Eliezer Hershtick and Yosef Malovani. In 2002, he was selected as Chief Cantor for the Great Orthodox Synagogue of Berlin, where his emotionally moving nusakh hatefillah inspired the congregation to request his permanent tenure. Likewise, he was invited to recite the Kel Malei Rachamim at the inaugural ceremonies of the Holocaust Museum in Berlin. Afterwards, he continued his appearances at global cantorial events, as well as at special cantorial Shabbaton experiences in hotels throughout Israel where he provided the respective worshippers with a unique sense of Oneg Shabbat.

During the High Holy Days of 2001, he led the services in the Tel Aviv Heikhal Meir synagogue under the presiding Rabbi Shlomo Dichovsky (Dayan in the Beit Din Hagadol), accompanied by a choir led by choirmaster Shaul Chakhami. There, too, did Cantor Fleishman's melodious liturgical rendition imbue his fellow congregants with a scinttilating love of Torah and reverence for Heaven.

Since the fall of 2002, Cantor Fleishman has served as Cantor of the beloved and storied Congregation Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem in Montreal, where he brings to expression his unique talent in harmoniously blending a panoply of musical styles for the sake of enhancing prayers on the Sabbath and festivals. Concomitantly, he continues to appear at concerts throughout North America. He is married to Tammy Levental, and they are the proud parents of Daniel, Yonatan and Yair.

Yosef is responsible for conducting services at TBDJ on Shabbat, Yom Tov, and other festivals. He participates in all religious events at TBDJ including Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, Brittim, funerals, and unveilings. Please contact him to arrange Bar Mitzvah lessons; to discuss planning for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding; to participate in a funeral or unveiling; or to discuss any issues of liturgy or music for any synagogue service.
